Leaders as Learners

A good leader is always learning. The great leaders start learning young and continue until their last breath.”  Bill Walsh

Leadership People Connection

We are living in ever increasingly VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) times. In these times of great change a new cadence is necessary, one where leaders understand the vital importance of adaptability, agility and learnability (David Culberhouse).  In this world learning and leading are inextricably linked.  With the ever increasing speed of change, it is the leaders commitment to ongoing learning that will help them to anticipate shifts and build the adaptive capacity of their organization and teams.

In recent times of political unrest, social unrest, weather extremes (fires, floods, tornados, tsunami’s), and pandemic reverberations, leaders who are lifelong learners explore knowledge across disciplines, fields, domains, cultures and communities. This breadth builds leadership capacity to understand diverse stakeholders and complex challenges.

According to Forbes Senior Contributor William Arruda, learning cultures not only build adaptive capacity, they boost employee engagement and job satisfaction. When leaders prioritize their own learning and growth and do so transparently - they model the learning journey for their followers.

The speed of change today requires leaders to be on a continuous journey of learning in order to incorporate the latest research and best practices as well as to have the greatest possible understanding of the landscape within which decisions have to be made.

What are you doing to intentionally model and create a culture of learning in your organization?
